  • We need to talk about extra-curricular activities

    Whenever I conduct group discussions with parents about their finances an intense conversation about extra-curricular activities follows. Our most recent study Middle Income Families: Lifestyle & Priorities was no exception. Parents lament that the cost of all their children’s various activities is simply too high and invariably uncomfortable compromises have to be made.

  • Modern parenting: From “self-esteem” to “resilience”

    Parents of tweens and teens often lament about the language and tone their kids use when speaking to them. That they would never have dreamt of addressing their own parents in such a forthright manner. It should be no surprise really that today’s tweens and teens are so outspoken. Throughout their lives they’ve been encouraged to assert themselves. The mantra of their parents has all been about instilling “self-esteem”. What is lacking in their lives, however, is resilience.

  • The issue Australian mums are angriest about

    There is one issue above all else that gets the overwhelming majority of Australian mums riled. When it comes to the immunisation of children they are extremely vocal and have little tolerance for those that choose not to immunise. This is one area where they seek legislative intervention to make it compulsory.
